Congratulations to Dr Marta Ponari who has been awarded £9,401 from British Academy/Leverhulme for a project titled "Where I end and you begin: the role of facial mimicry and interoception in emotion recognition". The project will explore the role of mimicry and interoception in fast emotional attributions and explicit categorization of ambiguous and non-ambiguous emotional expressions, using combined electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG).

Congratulations to Dr Marta Ponari who has been awarded £4,849.20 from the Faculty of Social Sciences for a project titled "The role of facial mimicry and interoception in emotion recognition"! The project will involve collection of psychophysiological data (facial electromyography, EEG) during explicit and implicit facial expression recognition tasks, to investigate a) the role of facial mimicry in implicit vs explicit recognition of facial expressions; b) whether individual differences in interoception are correlated with emotion recognition abilities; and c) whether and how interoception is related to facial mimicry.

New paper accepted!

Our new paper "Acquisition of abstract concepts is influenced by emotional valence" has been accepted for publication in Developmental Science!

In this study, we track for the first time the developmental trajectory of learning abstract words. We combine analyses of ratings of valence, concreteness and age of acquisition obtained from adult speakers with empirical data from an auditory lexical decision task in a cross-sectional study of children aged 6-12 years. In both studies, we have established a significant role for valence, especially positive, in the acquisition of abstract vocabulary.
